Why I Became a Christian

Having been born and raised Jewish, I’m occasionally asked about how and why I became a Christian. Some have assumed it was because my wife was raised Catholic and I converted as a matter of convenience. However, I had already been baptized a few years before Barbara and I had even started dating. Others have assumed that I didn’t like being Jewish or that I was ashamed or offended at my upbringing. Actually, quite the opposite is true. And since becoming a Christian I have a greater appreciation and understanding of Judaism and the tradition I was raised up in. The truth is that two words can sum up the reason why at the age of 18 I came to believe in Jesus Christ, and why I still love, trust and follow Him enthusiastically to this day. He’s alive!

Yes, I discovered, as many others have, that Jesus Christ is alive! And it was and still is really good news! Just as it was good news when Moses arrived on the scene in Egypt and the Lord demonstrated His supreme authority and power over Pharaoh and creation by delivering the children of Israel out of hundreds of years of forced slavery from which they could not have freed themselves.

I’m sure that after being slaves in Egypt for hundreds of years, God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (later named Israel) had become just a story to many. But all that changed after God raised Moses up and with all the events that preceded and followed that first Passover. Similarly, whenever someone would tell me that Jesus Christ was the Messiah who died for my sins and the sins of the whole world, I treated it as just a nice story and simply another religious tradition different than the one I had been raised up in. However all that changed in one night when I cried out to Jesus Christ and He revealed Himself to me and rescued me from the trap I had found myself ensnared in. I can tell you that had he not rescued me I would not be here writing this today.

So whether you are celebrating Passover or Easter this year (or both like I do) I trust this brief post will answer the question about why this Jew became a Christian. If you have would like to hear more, or have any questions, please feel free to private message me.

May God tremendously bless you this season!

Neal
